What are artists’ books, photo books, and zines?

Artists’ books are works of art that utilise the form of the book. They are often published in small editions, though they are sometimes produced as one-of-a-kind objects.

Artists’ books take many forms. An artist book is generally interactive, portable, movable and easily shared. Some artist books challenge the conventional book format and become sculptural objects.

Photo books are books in which photographs make a significant contribution to the overall content. Making use of various printing methods, photo books publish bodies of work into volumes that can be read at the pace and in the order of the reader’s choosing.

A zine (short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images. Usually reproduced on a photocopier, often consisting of fewer than 100 copies in an edition, zines maximise as few pages as possible so that they can be printed, folded, and circulated cheaply.
